Managing Vienna’s metro and tram – the beneficial effects of supporting an ever-growing network

The public transport network is one of the bedrocks of Vienna's excellent quality of life. The extensive metro and tramway network contributes by reducing exhaust gas pollution and scaling down Vienna's ecological footprint. For many years public transport's share distinctly exceeds motorised private transport's share of Vienna's modal split.

Measures taken to improve the quality of public transport are always in accordance with the city's urban development plan. Until 2025 Vienna's metro network will expand by about 12km. In 2025 the whole fleet of about 450 tramways will consist of low-floor-trams and new metro trains will operate on Vienna's first fully automated metro line.
