Progress achieved in the implementation of lightweight materials for primary railway structures

Talgo was the first company to use aluminium material to lighten the structure of railways worldwide. Since 2011, Talgo has been focussing its efforts on achieving lighter structures using composite materials, trying to transfer the aeronautical knowledge to the railway sector, and creating a new generation of primary structures, 15-30% lighter than the current ones.

REFRESCO (FP7 project) and ESTAVRIL (granted by Spanish national programs) have been two key projects in achieving this objective. The results achieved to date, together with railway industry efforts and the Shift2Rail project (H2020) will allow the design, manufacture and validation of a full carbody made by lighter materials for high speed trains.
