Big Data in a Railway Context

It is important, whether you are a small organisation or large, to get and have control over the data that the organisation generates. Data is generated constantly, and there is a lot to be gained by ensuring that they are collected, stored and utilised.

There are many ways of collecting and using data. This talk is going to deal in-depth with methods of doing that in a way that generates value to the organisation and how to improve data handling and analysis.

This presentaton will include real examples from the railway industry on how to make use of big data, more tangible and approachable as a newcomer to big data.

It is not necessarily big data in general that creates big value, but it is the right amount of data used in the right way that creates the biggest value to an organisation.

Significance of cross-border energy management for sustainable railway systems in Europe as example of big data handling for cost cutting
The importance of railway energy costs as a significant production factor is increasing enormously every year on the national level. However, the attention of European railway undertakings is changing to an international point of view. Regulations for energy metering on train vehicles have come to an end, energy billing rules are accepted but cross border energy suppliers and energy bills for corridors are dreams of the future because of big data. Until now...

Big Data / Utrecht LRT

Big Data has also entered the railway industry. Board computers, passenger smart cards and cell phones provide valuable data to enhance the design of networks and timetables. Big Data supports the improvement of transport models and cost benefit analyses (CBAs).

An example of such a success was the approval of a new light rail in Utrecht, in the Netherlands. It was not common to consider reliability benefits explicitly, but in this case they were responsible for the positive cost benefit ratio.
